What to consider when making the perfect cup of coffee
The type of coffee
You can now choose from a variety of forms of coffee as well as a huge range of flavours. There are traditional coffee beans that you can grind yourself, ground coffee and now the Pods, such as the Nespresso capsule system or the Philips Senseo.
Types of machines:
Filter Coffee Makers
There are two types of filter coffee maker available. Thermostatic hot plates keep your coffee warm after brewing for as long as required. Thermal filter coffee makers use the heat of your coffee to maintain its temperature for up to 4 hours without stewing. These machines specialise in making plain filter coffee.

Espresso machines - ‘The heart of a good cup of coffee'
The classic espresso is the base of every coffee style. Water is forced through finely ground coffee to give an amazing, intense flavour and deep dark colour. Drink the coffee black (an espresso), or add warmed frothy milk (a cappuccino).
Pump Vs. Steam
There are two types of espresso machine to choose from - pump machines and steam machines.

Pump machines heat the water to the correct temperature then force it through the coffee using an internal pump. This force is more intense than a steam machine and results in a higher quality and better tasting drink. The water tank can also be refilled at any time for unlimited coffee. Only a pump machine produces CREMA, which is the creamy foam that contains the full rich flavour and intense aroma of the coffee bean.

Steam machines are less expensive than pump models. With these machines the water must come to the boil to achieve the maximum pressure needed which means it cannot be refilled during use.
Bar pressure
Coffee when compressed builds a resistance against water. Therefore you need to force the water through to extract the flavour and aroma, consequently the higher the bar pressure the better the coffee will be. Standard steam machines tend to be between 3.5 to 5 bar, pump machines around 15 and Nespresso 19 (to break through the capsule).
Combination machines
Combination machines offer the ultimate in choice - you have the flexibility of producing both filter coffee and espresso.

For the perfect..   espresso

Brew espresso in an espresso machine following manufacturer's instructions. Pour your coffee into small cups, add sugar as required. If you want to drink it Italian style, allow to cool a little and knock it back in one or two gulps!
The base of every coffee style, whether it’s a latte or a cappuccino, is the classic Italian espresso. Espresso literally means ‘express’. Water is forced through finely ground coffee to give an amazing intense flavour and deep dark colour.

For the perfect..   cappuccino

A good cappuccino has just as much coffee flavour as a neat espresso but is softened by adding frothy milk. Espresso and combination machines have milk frothing features to create a creamy froth for your cappuccino. Sprinkle with chocolate powder or ground cinnamon.
One-third coffee, one-third hot milk and one-third foam - the classic recipe for a coffee that’s great to drink for breakfast or anytime. Lavazza Crema e Gusto makes great cappuccino.

For the perfect..   mocha

Pour half a cup of espresso coffee, and half a cup of hot chocolate into a mug or tall, heatproof glass. Then top with single cream, poured over the back of a spoon.

Mocha is the name for the classic Italian stove-top pot. It can also be a coffee with hot chocolate or chocolate syrup added.

For the perfect..   Cafe Latte

As with all good coffee, the base of a classic latte is espresso. Use a small cup of freshly brewed espresso per person as your base, topped up with hot milk which you can froth if liked. Any blend is suitable, depending on how full-flavoured you like your coffee. Serve your latte in a tall, heatproof glass.
Latte means milk in Italian and a latte is the perfect coffee for those who like a milky coffee that still has plenty of flavour. It’s the ideal breakfast coffee but is great any time of the day.
