How GPS works
A navigation device tells you exactly where you are and how to get from there to anywhere.
Here's a short summary of how this system works.
The GPS receiver determines your exact position.
The Global Positioning System (GPS) is actually a constellation of earth-orbiting satellites. The GPS receiver inside your navigation device picks up signals from these satellites and determines your exact position within seconds. Your movements are now tracked in real-time.
The map data is used to work out the desired route.
If you deviate from that route, the software recalculates it and puts you back on track.
Your device tells you where you are and where you need to be going.
A display, which can range from small screens with simple arrows to big colour screens, shows you which road to take. A clear, natural-sounding voice gives you turn-by-turn instructions as you drive. If required, you can have points of interest along your route displayed on the screen: restaurants, cash points, parking garages, etc.
