If everyone in the UK upgraded their old appliances to Energy Saving Recommended products, enough CO2 would be saved to fill over 35 million double-decker buses.

Energy and water savings data:

Cold appliance energy savings are calculated on the basis of new A+ rated models replacing average, or standard, old machines. New machine energy consumption is based on the following averages: refrigerator, 138 kWh/year; fridge freezer, 270 kWh/year; upright freezer, 219 kWh/year; chest freezer, 231 kWh/year. Washing machine energy savings are based on the replacement of old machines with the latest models that achieve an energy consumption of 207 kWh/year. Water consumption for a new washing machine is based on 50 litres/cycle.

NB. Washing machines do not officially have an A+ rated label, but the MTP agrees to some models using A+ in their marketing materials: namely those achieving the performance described above and 0.17 kWh per kilo energy performance on the 60ºC cotton cycle, which is the industry standard testing cycle.
