Whether you’re into the latest gaming consoles, or love an old-school DVD moment, you need the right cables to connect your setup to the TV in question. But what should you be looking out for when picking up a new TV cable?

Connection

HDMI to HDMI, HDMI to USB, USB to USB – TV cables love an acronym. But these aren’t a random assortment of letters. Rather, the type of connection you have on your TV cable will matter a lot for which devices you’re planning to use.

HDMI

HDMI cables are often the standard for connecting audiovisual technologies. Standing for High-Definition Multimedia Interface, an HDMI cable is capable of transmitting digital video and audio simultaneously.

HDMI cables are very often ‘male to male’. This means that both connections are on the outside of the cable, and are made to be plugged into a device at either end. For example, you’ll typically use an M-M HDMI cable between a TV and a games console, as these have the corresponding ‘female/internal’ HDMI ports.

USB

USB cables are incredibly common, and come in a variety of shapes and sizes depending on their usage. Back in the days before the Cloud or Drive, USBs were the pinnacle of transferring images and documents between computers. Now however, the USB-C connection has become incredibly popular as part of phone or laptop chargers.

USB stands for Universal Serial Bus, and this type of cable connection is able to share digital data from one source to another. So, if you ever need to hook up your laptop to your TV, chances are you’ll need at least one USB connection.

Length

It may seem a simple one, but you’d be surprised how many people forget to take the length of their TV cable into consideration when they’re buying a new one. Depending on your living room or office layout, you may need a longer HDMI cable to reach from one device to another. Although, if you can get away with a shorter lead, your mass of cables can look much tidier – and it’s much easier to keep track of what’s plugged in where!

At Comet, we have a great selection of TV cables ranging from 0.3m (just under 1 foot) to 7m (approx. 23 feet) to suit any setup.

Performance

Another key aspect to choosing the right TV cables for your setup is the level of performance you’re looking for. Whilst they’re ideal for casual connections, simpler HDMI cables may not have the capacity to support large-scale image transfers.

Let’s look at an example.

To get a smoother image, TV screens refresh multiple times a second to reduce motion blurring. The majority of TVs have a refresh rate of 60Hz, which means they refresh the image on screen 60 times every second. So, when you’re introducing a new connection – like a games console that works at 60fps – you need to ensure your cable can match the output to make the most of your end result. Using a lower rated TV cable, like 30Hz, means you’ll lose the difference in quality because the connection can only support half the transmission.

Get quality imaging when you choose Comet. We have a superb collection of 60Hz HDMI cables to help you take your movie or gaming experiences to the next level.

Ethernet and 4K

Similarly, another key aspect of HDMI cables and their performance is whether they can support a 4K connection. 4K is a way of describing how many pixels are shown on an image – more specifically 3840 x 2160p.

TVs and computer monitors that are capable of displaying 4K have better image quality. But, you need a connection that can transmit this level of detail to make the most of your hardware.

At Comet, we have an excellent range of HDMI cables with 4K capabilities for you to choose from.

Additionally, you should look out for TV cables with Ethernet built in. This allows you to get supreme Ethernet connectivity without a mass of wires hiding behind your entertainment set up.
